HOW LONG DO HAIR EXTENSIONS LAST?

Hair extensions are an investment piece that should last you a significant amount of time depending on which brand of hair extensions you go for, how you look after them and also if they’re human or synthetic. For you to get the most out of your hair extensions, it is important that you are doing your part to look after them in terms of aftercare. There are also so many different hair extension brands on the market, so it is worthwhile taking some time to do your research and finding out which brand is right for you. To help you out a little, in this blog post we’ll be looking at the different types of hair extensions and will investigate how long each one lasts so that you can make the best decision on what to buy!

Synthetic clip in hair extensions:

Synthetic hair extensions may be a great option for you if you're on a budget but want to switch up your look. There are many high quality synthetic hair extensions out there so don’t worry about compromising on quality too much!

One of the negatives about synthetic hair extensions is that you cannot treat them as you would your own hair. Washing them and using heated tools may cause them damage meaning this greatly affects their longevity. Synthetic hair extensions can potentially only last you a few wears! This depends on if you avoid using heat and if you take care of them properly (taking clip-ins out at night, removing tangles and avoiding heavy product use). If you choose to use heated tools on your extensions, you can expect them last for a very limited time.

Human hair clip in extensions:

Human hair clip-in extensions are the best choice when it comes to making a hair investment. This is especially true if you go for a high grade quality of remy hair! If you work hard to maintain your extensions and are using the best products that ensure they stay soft and shiny, they can last you for a long time. One of the good things about human hair extensions is that they can take the strain of heat styling tools - if you’re using a heat protectant and aren't using too high of a heat, this shouldn’t be a major issue.

With proper use and good maintenance, human hair extensions should last you about 12 months. If you don’t invest in quality products and don’t take good care of your extensions, they will last you between 3-6 months.

Tape human hair extensions:

If you didn’t know, tape hair extensions are an effective, semi-permanent hair extension option that are applied close to the roots; as your hair grows, the extensions move down in the same way that hair colour grows out. They stick to your own hair strands through the use of glue/adhesive.

You can actually wash your hair with tape extensions installed but you'll need to cut down on how often you wash your hair. Over washing will loosen your bonds and cause the quality of your hair to deteriorate more quickly. Adding to this, you can still use certain heating tools such as hairdryers and straightening irons while you have your extensions in, but you will have to avoid using heat near the tape as this can ruin the extensions.

Tape hair extensions that are well taken care of can usually last around 6-8 weeks before needing to be retouched. And if they are well maintained they can be re-taped up to three times.

Microlink hair extensions:

Microlinks are meant to be a more natural-looking alternative to sew-ins and they can last slightly longer than tape-in extensions. They work by attaching a small, silicone or metal bead which is used to attach strands to a tiny piece of your own hair. The bead is then clamped shut and holds the extension and your hair in place.

Like with human clip in extensions, it is important to use quality products that are designed for hair extensions. Be sure to use a conditioner after washing but be sure that conditioners, masks or treatments are applied on the length of the hair and on the ends and not the roots.

Microlink hair extensions can last up to 2-3 months with regular maintenance: detangling and washing regularly as you would do your own hair.

Sew in hair extensions:

Sew in extensions are applied by braiding the natural hair into cornrows first, then using a needle and thread to sew the weave into the braid or cornrow. You can use human or synthetic hair for this. Usually this method is predominantly used for people with thicker hair because of the way they are applied.

You can wash sewn-in extensions about as often as you wash your natural hair, but it’s best to be very gentle to avoid tugging at the stitching as this will reduce the longevity of the extensions.

It is recommended to remove sew in extensions every 6–8 weeks. The maximum amount of time you should have a full weave in your hair is 4 months as it will affect your natural hair's growth.
